A long awaited Cassy update! 🐱

Some very paws-itive news regarding mountain lion Cassy… she is back to having access to her outdoor yard after some renovations- a brand new den!

At age 16, Cassy is considered geriatric. In April, she had shown some behaviors (such as refusing to eat) that gave her care team some concern. After an exam and a switch in her diet, she has since returned to her spunky self.

This was an opportune moment to evaluate & make changes to improve our capabilities in providing essential care. During the process of preparing Cassy for her exam, staff had come to the realization that her old den & its placement made it exceedingly difficult to have proper access to Cassy.

We want to thank Docents Mike and Larry for volunteering to help build Cassy a new and improved den that allows staff easier access to monitor her as well as provide her the care that she needs! Stop by and say hi again to Cassy at the Zoo’s Kansas Carnivores exhibit. 🐱

Sorry for the delay, we were busy chipping hay. If you guessed Cora, the Asian elephant, you were correct! What do you think the tooth fairy should bring her?

Cora will be 66 years old this year and just lost her last upper tooth. If you are wondering how she is able to chew, our elephant team now does this for her. No, not like a baby bird, but with tools like hay chippers and pruners.

Inside their mouth, elephants have two teeth on top and two teeth on bottom. Like everything regarding elephants, they're quite large! They have 6 sets of teeth in their lifetime and generally break off smaller pieces at a time. Both of our elephants are on their last sets of teeth and have been for many years.

In the wild, elephants that cannot masticate as well move to areas where they can find softer plants to eat. With older elephants in human care, it's known that breaking down their food for them at some point is a reality we have to stay prepared for. "This is not entirely new as we have been helping to process Cora's food for a couple of years now" says Animal Curator and Elephant Manager, Wrylie Guffey. "It takes a lot of work and special equipment, but seeing her do well makes it all worth the effort."

Along with breaking up her hay and browse, she is also receiving food that is more nutrient dense to help her maintain weight and some grain products that are soaked in order to make them easier to eat. While this event is a reminder of Cora's elderly age, she is transitioning well to these changes and, as always, her health and well-being continue to be closely monitored by her care team. If you're familiar with Cora, you already know she is loving the extra attention.
