Turkey vulture Lurch is soaring to new heights! 🎊

The Topeka Zoo is excited to announce that Lurch, previously housed in an area behind-the-scenes, has been moved to a larger unit that allows him to be visible to guests. He can now be viewed from the boardwalk at Hill’s Black Bear Woods.

Lurch arrived to the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in 2022 as a 6-month-old orphan that had imprinted on humans, meaning he would be incapable of surviving on his own in the wild.

Since arriving, he has formed strong bonds with his care team, but especially with his primary trainer- Keeper Ashley! Keeper Ashley says that the move to his new unit will allow him continue to work on his free-flight training. It also is the best way for him to do one of his favorite activities: people watching!

While you and Lurch may be ‘watching’ each other, we ask that guests refrain from making loud noises or calls as he continues to acclimate to his new environment.

And remember, bald IS beautiful! ❤️

Happy Friday from our friends in Adventure Trail! 🦜

The lorikeet aviary and petting zoo are now OPEN for the season from 9:30 am to 4 pm daily. Entry is included in our general admission.

Tokens can be purchased for $1 to feed the lorikeets 🦜 inside our gift shop, the Tiger’s Den retail station by the playground, or at the token machine inside our Animal & Man building. 1 token = 1 cup of nectar for the birds. Tokens are exchanged for nectar inside the aviary!

Our friends at the petting zoo can be fed by purchasing feed for 25 cents at the machine inside the petting zoo. 🐐🦙

We ask that you only feed these animals the food that is sold at the Zoo as it is specific to their diet requirements. For the health of our animals, feedings are limited each day. If you’re hoping to flock in for a feeding, we suggest visiting as early as possible!

Yesterday was Taco TWOsday! 🌮🌮

Our Bornean orangutan care team served up a delicious ‘taco’ bar to celebrate baby Udara’s 2nd birthday (bravo to Nashville Zoo for the original excelente theme/enrichment idea)!

Udara (along with the rest of the Bornean orangutan troop) enjoyed tacos of romaine lettuce, tomato, and onion. And what treetop taco bar would be complete without ‘margaritas’? 🍸 The orangutan-approved beverage contained watered down lemonade, with biscuit powder as a ‘salted’ rim!

Thank you to all the guests that attended, and to everyone that helped make Udara’s second birthday a special one! 🌮🦧
