Some of our zoo residents have been bear-y active recently! 🐻

Now that the spring weather has become frequently warmer, your chances of seeing our two bears during your visit to the Topeka Zoo are greater!

You can view Sun bear Hoho by visiting Liana’s Forest. Sun bears are the smallest of all bear species- males weigh up to 150 lbs, which is about half the size of an American black bear. Sun bears are arboreal, meaning they love to climb & often rest in trees- a perfect adaptation considering they are native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia.

American black bear, Val, can sometimes be seen on her climber or roaming Hill’s Black Bear Woods. Black bears are endemic to a wide range across North America- living in dense forested areas. While they are America’s smallest bear species, they are twice the size of the Sun bear and have a much wider distribution.

We hope that during your visit you’re able to spot the differences between these two amazing species yourself! 🐻🌲
