🐻 Exciting cub-date!

Rescued black bear cubs Taz (darker, male) and Kiona (chestnut colored, female) have had a momentous occasion of being introduced to the main yard of Hills Black Bear Woods. With these play times that are supervised by animal care staff, visitors will have a greater chance to see the cubs in playful action!

The Zoo's carnivore team is very pleased with how the yard introductions have gone. "Taz and Kiona have been wonderful additions to the Zoo. We are so excited that they are finally big enough to be introduced more to the community!" exclaimed Shanna Simpson, animal curator. "Being a home to rescued bear cubs is an incredible honor, and it's so special seeing the Zoo continue its legacy of being an active participant in bear conservation."

Both cubs arrived at the Topeka Zoo in the fall after being deemed not fit to survive in the wild, and being too adapted to humans. Though they are not biologically related, they are roughly similar in age, housed together, and act as siblings would.

For now, there is no set schedule of when the cubs will be given yard access as it is weather dependent, and they currently have to trade times of having access with adult black bear, Val. Eventually, the plan is to fully introduce the cubs to Val and allow the three bears to share space, but there is no set time of when that will be able to happen.

Follow us to stay cub-dated on the black bears' lives and get the behind-the-scenes info!

Way to Party for our Planet! 🥳🌎🌍🌏

THANK YOU to the visitors and volunteers that made yesterday's Party for the Planet: An Earth Day Celebration so special. The goal for the celebration was to raise awareness on ways to protect the planet and the variety of life inhabiting it - and that goal was certainly accomplished. Over 30 outside organizations & agencies came together to make the event possible, including presenting sponsor, Club Car Wash.

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is incredibly thankful to help foster a community that cares!

What is THAT?! 🦬🐯

As part of our Party for the Planet celebration (presented by Club Car Wash), the Audubon of Kansas brought a taxidermy American bison to educate guests on the species that once roamed much of North America, including Kansas, and the importance of preserving our prairies.

Sumatran tigers Nisha and Thomas were very intrigued and enriched by the arrival of the bison, an unintended bonus of its presence!
