“Everyone has a zoo story.”
— Gary K. Clarke, Topeka Zoo Director, 1963–1989

Could you imagine a world without these fascinating animals? Neither could we.

At the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center, we work every day to care for the animals in our collection while helping our guests better understand the natural world.

Our conservation work extends beyond our habitats through programs that support threatened species, protect native wildlife, and encourage our community to make choices that benefit the environment.

Zoos help turn curiosity into action. A visit can be the beginning of learning about a species, discovering a conservation issue, or finding a way to make a difference.

This National Zoo Awareness Day, share your zoo story with us! Tell us about a favorite memory, share a photo, or let us know which animal has made an impact on you.

And if you’re looking to make a new zoo memory, we’ll be open on Labor Day, Monday, September 7!

Happy International Whale Shark Day! 🐋💙

Earlier this summer, we unveiled a new mural alongside our Washed Ashore sculptures, reminding us that even here in landlocked Kansas, our actions can impact the world’s oceans.

From Topeka, water travels through the Kansas, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers before reaching the ocean. What we put into our environment can travel much farther than we realize.

Washed Ashore creates incredible sculptures from plastic pollution collected from beaches and coastlines. Our mural expands on that message, showing how the choices we make every day can affect wildlife both close to home and around the world.

There’s still time to explore the Washed Ashore sculptures throughout Topeka! See the two sculptures at the Zoo and discover the four additional sculptures around the city before the exhibit wraps up on September 13.

Visit our website for locations and more information. 🌊🐋https://topekazoo.org/washed-ashore/

Happy 2nd Birthday to our Dwarf Caiman, Beni! 🐊🎉

Beni was rescued by US Fish & Wildlife Service when she was just a month old after being found inside a UPS package. She eventually joined the ambassador animal program at Dallas Zoo before arriving at Topeka Zoo last November.

While Beni has become more interested in training recently, she still has her moments when she’d rather do things her own way. One of her favorite ways to tell her keepers she’s not interested? Simply closing her eyes and pretending they aren’t there!

But don’t let her stubborn side fool you, Beni has made great progress with her training. She’s learned to walk on her crate and enjoys taking a dip in her pool!

Two years old and already quite the character! Come meet Beni and see her personality for yourself! 🐊

A special thank-you to one of Beni’s keepers, Caroline, for helping tell her story! 💚
