Orchids & Orchid Mantids!

NEW to the Zoo are Orchid mantids - a species of praying mantis aptly named for its resemblance to the orchid flower, which we also house at the Topeka Zoo!

Inside Schindel's Bug Zoo, the female Orchid mantis now on display is easy to spot - females are much larger and brighter than their male counterparts and have longer lifespans. While the Zoo houses both female and males, the males must be kept separate in an area behind-the-scenes. In proper human care, the average lifespan of an orchid mantis is about 5 - 9 months, with females typically outliving the males. If you aren't informed on mantis mating styles - giving that a google search may tell you more on why the females live longer. 💔

In nature, Orchid mantids are found in tropical Southeast Asia!

🌻Happy Kansas Day🌻

In 1976, Kansas schoolchildren across the state successfully petitioned to instate the honeybee as the Kansas State Insect by successfully collecting over 2,000 signatures. This passion upholds even today, as multiple schools within Shawnee County have partnered with the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center to plant pollinator gardens/Monarch Waystations on school properties. Students & faculty maintain these gardens on school properties to aid not only honeybees, but multiple species of pollinators.

🐝T hese partnerships are made possible by our community's willingness to participate- and we want to give a little back to our hive. From now until January 31, ANYONE can receive 10% off a new or renewed Topeka Zoo Membership using the code WeLoveKS2026.

“WHO is THAT?!” 🐢

The temps may be cold outside, but the tropical rainforest dome is kept around 75 degrees all year long. During these periods of lower attendance, animal care staff loves to allow our red-footed tortoise chances to roam the dome for additional exercise. This monitored walk also allows for enrichment for the birds housed in the dome, as they get to observe a new creature in their environment!
