It’s Reptile & Amphibian Awareness Day- the perfect day to introduce you to the new resident of our Gary K. Clarke Education Center! Meet Lite Brite, a 4 year old Bearded Dragon.
Bearded dragons can extend or puff out their throats, giving them a spiked ‘beard’. This behavior is done for many reasons- as a defensive maneuver to appear tough, for stretching, or for regulating their temperature, like Lite Write is doing in these photos. To release heat, puffing up their throat may be accompanied by opening their mouth, similar to how some mammals pant.
One more thing- Bearded dragons can change the colors of their beard! When a beard appears darker or black, it can mean the lizard is stressed, ill, adjusting to change in it’s environment, or ready to mate. Each bearded dragon has its own preferences and ways of communicating, so caretakers really have to observe & learn the behaviors of their individual. We can’t wait to get to know and learn more of Lite Brite’s unique personality! 🦎

🌭Feeling hungry like a (were)wolf? Sunflower's Cafe will be serving up $8 combo meals with your choice of a hamburger or hot dog- each meal comes with chips & a drink.
🦁Friends of the Topeka Zoo members get in free and will have their own entry lines at both admissions booths - be sure to have your cards & I.D.s ready for a smooth entrance. We can't wait to see you all in your most boo-tiful costumes!
