Wishing the master of stoic faces a happy 37th birthday!

Mawas, a male Bornean orangutan, is easily distinguishable from the other Orangutans in the troop by his large cheek pads (called flanges). Only males that produce high levels of testosterone develop these distinct facial features, meaning only the dominant males of higher social hierarchy in the troop have them. This is why Mawas has cheek pads but his son, Bumi, does not (yet).

Orangutan facial expressions differ greatly from a human's - what looks like a smile to us is actually a threatening facial expression to them (baring teeth, pulling back lips). On the contrary - a face that appears 'sad' or 'bored' to humans, is likely a face of general contentment from an Orangutan! Mawas is often misunderstood by visitors as he frequently appears unamused - but we're here to educate and inform. Some of Mawas' favorite activities that illicit more expressive faces are: being near female Rudy, napping in the sun, consuming as many heads of romaine as he's allowed, and play wrestling with his offspring.

Oh snap - Dwarf caimans are serious about their meal!

Our newest Zoo resident, Dwarf caiman Beni, has been settling in to her new habitat inside the Tropical Rainforest dome well. This tiny tyrant is about a year old and is seen snacking on a 'pinky' mouse in this clip. If you're searching for her during your next visit - take your time to look at the leaves in the caiman pool; she is small and blends in well!
