🦔 Sad news regarding hedgehog, Nettle…

Close followers of the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center may remember the video of Nettle using a mobility aide which her care team had made using Lego bricks. This mobility aide was made when Nettle received a diagnosis of Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, a degenerative neurological disease which affected Nettle’s capacity to carry weight on her hind legs. Unfortunately, this disease has no cure and can progress rapidly.

While her mobility aide successfully improved her quality of life for some time, after a recent assessment of her health & mobility, the decision was made to humanely euthanize Nettle yesterday (1/20/2026).

“Nettle was a popular ambassador animal. She participated in many programs and educated so many people about her species.” said Small Vertebrate Keeper, Joe H. “She enjoyed walking in her ball for exercise, and recently she enjoyed walking with the walking device that staff built for her. She was very sweet and became more social as she aged. She was a special girl, and she will be missed by all who knew her.”

We’re extremely proud of the effort put in by Nettle’s care team to keep her comfortable and mobile, and appreciate support shown from the community. 💙

Like TWO peas 🫛 in a pod. 🐻

Carnivore keepers celebrated Black bear cub Kiona turning two years old over the weekend (approximately - her exact date of birth is unknown!). Theming was chosen given her closeness to her care team as well as the fact that her & adopted brother, Taz, are constantly together. 🫛🐻🐻

Black bears Taz & Val both had birthdays in December, where Taz turned 1 and Val turned 12! It’s typical for black bears to be born while mothers den over winter, then emerge for the first time in the spring!
