Some of us are just waking up for Bat Appreciation Day 🦇

One myth about bats? That they all have terrible eyesight! Our only-true-flighted-mammal friends in the Tropical Rainforest dome are Indian flying foxes, a species of fruit bat that locates foods using their excellent sight and hearing as opposed to echolocation. Fruit bats don’t even have the capability to echo locate!

Every day is bat appreciation day here at the Zoo- bats are important pollinators. Over 500 species of plants rely on bats to pollinate - including bananas, mangoes, durian, guava and agave. (via www.bats.org.uk) 🍌🦇

Calling the Topeka area: Help YOUR Zoo help YOUR community! 👚👟

The Topeka Zoo is hosting our annual Party for the Planet on April 19. As part of this celebration, we hold a clothing drive with the goal of collecting an amount equal to African elephant Tembo's weight. Not only does this clothing drive aid in keeping a substantial amount of waste made up of clothing/garments from going to a landfill, but it aids those in need in the Topeka (and Lawrence) community. Last year, we were able to donate more than Tembo AND hippopotamus Tank's weight combined in gently used clothes & shoes to multiple organizations in Topeka, Lawrence & even Kansas City.

Donations will be collected on April 19 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (or until we've exceeded our collection capabilities!) in the Zoo's South Entry Parking Lot. We ask that no shopping be done to make donations, as that contradicts the goal of eliminating landfill waste. Please ensure donations are clean and in bags or boxes for ease of transport/weighing. No undergarments will be accepted.

Clean for spring, drop your donation, and attend our Party for the Planet! 🌏

Eggscellent otter photos for your feed! 🥚🦦

Yesterday we hosted our annual EGGSTRAVAGANZA which has provided us with plenty of content for the week leading up to Easter! The animals enjoyed special spring-themed enrichment complete with animal safe paper-mache eggs. The otters also received boiled eggs that were peeled and colored, providing on-theme protein! 💪

Why limit happy hour to an hour?? 🍾🕠

Asante had fun all day at her 21st birthday party! Our lioness is one of the oldest lions in North America so celebrating her is extra special. The median life expectancy of lions in Zoos is 16. The Topeka Zoo Animal Care and Veterinary teams do an amazing job at providing geriatric care, keeping Asante healthy & active.

Asante’s Keepers were super creative with her party but don’t’ worry, Asante was not given any alcoholic beverages. Happy 21st birthday to our amazing Asante!! (We know she’ll be attending Roar and Pour Wine Fest Presented by Kaw Valley Bank 🦁🍷 on April 26th! 😉)

THANK YOU to the Kindergarten class at Topeka Collegiate 💙🦒

Each year, the Topeka Collegiate Kindergarten class makes a visit to the Zoo. Besides bringing us the gift of being able to inspire new generations of animal lovers & conservationists, they also donate a gift of enrichment items as a thank you for the animals! Animal crackers, BBQ Sauce, peanut butter, saltines - all are items we saw brought in today. Director of Animal Care, Wrylie, probably had just as much fun telling the children which animals would be receiving their donations/special treats as the animals will have receiving them!
