Salt Creek Tiger Beetle: One of the World’s Rarest Insects
The Salt Creek Tiger Beetle is one of the rarest and most endangered insects in the world. With a highly restricted range, these beetles are found only in a 15-acre remnant of saline wetlands in Lancaster County, Nebraska. Fewer than 1,000 individuals remain in the wild, making them critically endangered.
Listed as Critically Endangered in 2005...
...the species faces significant threats to its survival, primarily from habitat loss. At one point, salt harvesting in their natural habitat in Nebraska pushed the species to the brink of extinction. Thankfully, salt deposits were discovered in Hutchinson, Kansas, which led to the transfer of salt operations, allowing the fragile 15-acre saline wetland in Nebraska to remain untouched. This area now serves as the last refuge for the Salt Creek Tiger Beetle, and it’s the final hope for the species' survival.
Our Conservation Commitment:
Topeka Zoo is proud to be part of a collaborative conservation effort aimed at saving the Salt Creek Tiger Beetle. In partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, and the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, we’re actively working to protect this species.
Annual Breeding and Rearing Program
Every year, once the beetle eggs hatch at the Henry Doorly Zoo, the larvae are transported to the Topeka Zoo. Here, they are carefully raised in a rearing chamber for part of the year before being sent back to Nebraska for release into the salt flats.
Genetic Diversity and Population Growth
This breeding and release program helps ensure a continuous infusion of new juveniles and fresh DNA into the population, which is crucial for maintaining the health and genetic diversity of the species.
Join the Fight to Save Endangered Species
Together, we can make a difference. By supporting Topeka Zoo’s SAFE initiatives, you’re helping protect vulnerable species, restore habitats, and ensure a future where wildlife can thrive. Join us in taking action today!
