Giraffe: Facing a Silent Extinction
Over the last 30 years, giraffe populations in Africa have plummeted by 40%, leaving fewer than 80,000 giraffe across the continent. Tragically, giraffe have already become extinct in seven African countries and now survive in only 21 of the 56 African nations. Approximately 80% of their historic range has been lost, an area roughly the size of the United States.
Giraffe are experiencing what is known as a “silent extinction.” While their numbers have decreased drastically, this crisis has received little public attention. The reticulated giraffe, like those here at the Topeka Zoo, is considered one of the most endangered giraffe species, having experienced a decline of more than 50% in the last 20 years.

Our Conservation Commitment:
At the Topeka Zoo, we’ve stuck our necks out for giraffes, committing to a comprehensive conservation plan that includes:
Breeding Program
Over the years, we’ve had multiple successful giraffe births, contributing to the genetic diversity and health of the species.
World-Class Education
We provide exceptional educational programs at the zoo, raising awareness about giraffe and the urgent need for conservation.
Groundbreaking Giraffe Research
Our research has led to significant advancements in giraffe care worldwide, especially in managing issues like hyper-extended fetlocks, improving the health and well-being of giraffes globally.
Conservation Funding
Each year, we contribute significant funding to giraffe conservation efforts in the countries where giraffe still roam, with a focus on programs that employ and empower local indigenous communities.

Giraffe Conservation Foundation
Giraffe Conservation works tirelessly to protect and restore giraffe populations across Africa through scientific research, habitat preservation, and community engagement. By addressing key threats like habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict, the organization collaborates with local communities and conservation partners to provide sustainable solutions. Their efforts focus on preserving the environment that giraffes and other wildlife depend on, while actively increasing awareness and involvement in preserving these iconic animals. Through extensive fieldwork and advocacy, Giraffe Conservation hopes to ensure a thriving future for giraffes in the wild.
