TIGER TRAILS & DEN ACADEMY

Tiger Trails & Den Academy offers an immersive experience that brings guests closer to Sumatran tigers and King Vultures while inspiring future conservation leaders. The Den Academy engages children in hands-on STEM learning, teaching them about wildlife conservation and the challenges tigers face. Through interactive activities, kids develop empathy and a deeper understanding of conservation, empowering them to take action. This initiative is a vital step in nurturing the next generation of wildlife advocates. Looks like they didn't go extinct. 👀🦖

We're excited to announce the arrival of 10 new species to the Topeka Zoo, traveling all the way from the Mesozoic era! If you visit this week, you may see us getting these prehistoric creatures settled into their new home (& time period). Shoutout to their care team at Dino Don, Inc. for the amazing crate-training that has made the transfer & offloading of these animals a breeze, although they may have wreaked some havoc on our helpers from KBS Constructors.

Dinosaurs ALIVE! presented by KBS Constructors Foundation opens officially on May 23; Friends of the Topeka Zoo members can join us that evening from 5:30 to 7:30 pm for a ribbon cutting, first-look at the dinos, coloring sheets & crafts, and an evening at the Zoo. Be the first paleontologists in our fossil dig pit! ⛏️🦖🦕

Spreading Awareness on Endangered Species! 🧡

Visit us today and learn about a wide range of incredible, critically endangered species (like the Golden Lion Tamarin) through educational booths that will be set up around the Zoo until 3 pm. Chat with our docents, feel some animal artifacts, and learn about what everyone can do to help save animals from extinction!

Sumatran tiger glamour shots for Endangered Species Day! Not only are we proud to care for Thomas & Nisha (pictured) but the Topeka Zoo also provides care for Sumatran tigers in the wild by funding a Ranger in the Leusser region of Sumatra. This Ranger’s job is to protect the land from illegal activities while also educating locals on sustainable practices and aiding in decreasing human-animal conflict.

Currently, we are fundraising to further advance our care of this incredible species with the Tiger Trails & Den Academy campaign. This new exhibit is essential to continue building our legacy in providing care that goes above & beyond standards.

It's Endangered Species Day - the perfect day to highlight one of the world's rarest insect species (and conservation work we're proud to be a part of)! 🪲

The Salt Creek tiger beetle spends a majority of its lifespan living as a larva (pictured) underground. This endangered species can only be found in 15 acres of restored saline wetlands along Salt Creek in Lancaster county- just north of Lincoln, NE. Last week, a group of entomologists released about 170 tiger beetle larvae (including ones raised here in Topeka!) into the wild by digging & placing the larvae in tiny, protected burrows. Just look at the tip of the paint brush for scale!

This collaborative effort of conservation is made with Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, Lincoln Children's Zoo, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service , Nebraska Game and Parks Commission , Lincoln Parks & Recreation, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Lower Platte Natural Resources District, and the Saline Wetlands Partnership.
