Protecting Wildlife for Future Generations

Our commitment to preserving biodiversity, protecting local wildlife, and engaging our community in meaningful conservation efforts. At the heart of our work is the belief that a thriving world for wildlife and humans alike begins with education, collaboration, and direct action.

Commitment to Conservation

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is committed to leading efforts in conservation, but we recognize that real change happens when we work together as a community. We are dedicated to engaging and inspiring our community to take an active role in conservation. Whether it's through hands-on educational programs, wildlife protection initiatives, or community science projects, we strive to create a lasting impact on the world around us.

  • Partnering with SAFE Programs

The Topeka Zoo collaborates with multiple SAFE Programs, contributing to the survival of numerous species around the world.

  • Local Conservation Work

We provide direct, on-the-ground efforts to conserve wildlife in Kansas, ensuring the survival of species like the black-footed ferret and monarch butterfly in our own backyard.

  • Supporting Sumatran Tiger Conservation

The zoo funds Wildlife Rangers in Sumatra to protect the endangered Sumatran tiger.

  • Care for Asian Elephants

We support the health and care of Asian elephants by funding a full-time veterinarian in Asia.

  • Research and Education

In addition to providing significant funding for conservation, the zoo engages in impactful research, fieldwork, and hands-on action. We also offer award-winning conservation education programs that raise awareness and inspire action in our community.

Community Zoo, Global Impact

While we are deeply committed to local conservation, we also recognize our global responsibility. As part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program, the Topeka Zoo is proud to be involved in the protection of several iconic species around the world. Through these and other global partnerships, the Topeka Zoo plays an active role in safeguarding biodiversity and advancing conservation practices on a worldwide scale.

Conservation through Sustainability

Sustainability Initiatives:

The following five Sustainability Initiatives were developed and form the framework of the zoo’s strategic plan. Each initiative has overlap with more than one sustainability development goal.

  1. Slow the threat of extinction.
  2. Reduce the effects of plastic on the environment.
  3. Ensure food availability for the future.
  4. Create respect and empathy for water conservation.

Conservation through sustainability can benefit both local and global species by adopting practices that promote environmental health, biodiversity, and long-term ecosystem stability.

Conservation through sustainability for zoos involves integrating environmentally responsible practices into every aspect of zoo operations to protect biodiversity and support long-term ecological balance. By prioritizing sustainability, zoos can enhance their conservation efforts by:

  • Supporting Habitat Protection

Ensuring that the natural habitats of endangered species are preserved or restored and supporting conservation projects.

  • Education and Advocacy

Raising awareness throughout the community about the importance of sustainability and how everyone actions impact wildlife and the environment.

  • Sustainable Practices

Adopting energy-efficient technologies, waste reduction methods, and water conservation techniques within zoo operations, which also serve as incentives for our community to follow.

  • Breeding Programs

Implementing sustainable breeding and genetic management practices to ensure the survival of endangered species. Increasing involvement in in-situ conservation work and release programs.

  • Partnerships

Collaborating with global conservation organizations, local communities, and governments to support sustainable wildlife management and habitat restoration initiatives.
