Koi
COMMON NAME: Koi
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Cyprinus Rubrofuscus
Koi Fish are members of the Carp family and were selectively bred as ornamental fish in Japan beginning in the early 19th century. Their markings are highly varied and range in color from red to orange, yellow, blue, cream and even metallics.
They are opportunistic feeders and will consume a broad range of foods including invertebrates, fruits, vegetation, and algae.
Koi Fish begin spawning in late spring. Females may deposit thousands of sticky eggs, which will attach to their surroundings for protection.
Given ideal conditions, this species is capable of growing to an average of over 35 pounds.
Fun Fact: Koi Fish have the potential to be very long-lived and are sometimes passed down through generations.
