Ensure Food Availability for the Future

Connecting People, Food, and Conservation

Through sustainable food practices, community outreach, and educational programs, we aim to empower individuals to grow their own food and support local food systems, helping create a resilient future for both people and wildlife.

At the Topeka Zoo sustainability is at the heart of our mission. We understand that when people are hungry, their priority is simply to find food—survival often takes precedence over long-term solutions. That’s why we’re passionate about ensuring food is not only available today but also secure for future generations. By connecting food production to human consumption, we’re working toward a more sustainable future, where communities are empowered with the knowledge and resources to thrive.

for the Future
How the Community Can Help
  1. Support Local Food Banks and Food Security Programs: Volunteer time or donate non-perishable food items to local food banks like Project Topeka. Supporting these initiatives helps provide food for those in need and ensures that local communities have access to the resources they need, especially during challenging times.

  2. Grow Your Own Food: Start a home garden! Whether it’s growing fruits, vegetables, or herbs, gardening can contribute to personal food security. Even small container gardens or community garden plots can make a big difference. It reduces reliance on large-scale agricultural systems and encourages local, sustainable food production.

  3. Contributing to the food drives organized by the Topeka Zoo will help provide essential resources to those in need while supporting the community's efforts toward food security and sustainability.

  4. Participate in Local Food Drives and Community Events: Take part in or organize local food drives and events that collect donations for those in need. Offering resources like food or funds can directly contribute to ensuring food availability in your community.

  5. Help to Reduce Food Waste: Be mindful of food consumption by reducing food waste at home. Plan meals, store food properly, and reuse leftovers. Small changes in individual habits can have a significant impact on reducing the strain on global food systems.

  6. Promote Education on Sustainable Cooking: Learn and share skills for cooking with fresh, local ingredients. Support educational opportunities that teach the community how to prepare and preserve food in a sustainable way, making healthy, home-cooked meals more accessible for everyone.

  7. Be a Steward of Local Resources: Protect natural resources, such as water and soil, by using them responsibly. Simple actions like reducing water waste, supporting soil conservation, and promoting the health of ecosystems can help ensure that future generations have the resources needed to grow food.

Guiding principle

The presence of hunger prevents us from connecting with and delivering the zoos message to a significant portion of our community. Hunger is going to have adverse impacts on the environment as more of the environment is altered for increased food production. Therefore, to support conservation, we must support solving the hunger issue now and for the future.

Food Drive
Strategy 1

Ensuring Food Availability for the Future

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center uses its facilities to collect food, make food available to those in need, and to provide education that connects food production to human consumption.

Goal 1: Food Collection and Community Support: We are passionate about supporting local food security efforts, helping meet immediate needs while also laying the groundwork for long-term sustainability. Our food collection initiatives include:

  • Partnering with Project Topeka, a local food bank that distributes meals to those in need across our community.

  • Hosting annual food drives during zoo events and free days, where visitors can donate non-perishable food items in exchange for discounted or free admission.

  • Running round-up fundraising programs, where zoo guests can round up their purchases to support local food security efforts.

  • Offering on-site food distribution points to ensure that zoo staff and their families have access to healthy meals.

Goal 2: Raising Awareness About Sustainable Food Practices: Once immediate hunger is addressed, we can turn our focus to sustainable food practices that support long-term food security. We aim to educate the public on growing and preparing their own food to promote resilience and self-sufficiency. Our educational initiatives include:

  • A Demonstration Garden on zoo grounds, where visitors can learn how to grow their own produce and see firsthand how local food production can make a difference.

  • Providing Container Gardening Guides to help people grow food at home, regardless of available space.

  • Hosting culinary classes for both staff and the public, teaching how to prepare and cook fresh, locally grown produce.
