NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PHOTO ARK PROJECT OVERVIEW

The interaction between animals and their environments is critical for maintaining a healthy planet that we call home. But for many species, time is running out. When you remove one, it affects us all. The National Geographic Photo Ark is a multiyear effort to raise awareness of and find solutions to some of the most pressing issues affecting wildlife and their habitats. Founded by Joel Sartore — National Geographic Explorer, photographer and 2018 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year — the project aims to document every species living in the world’s zoos, aquariums, and wildlife sanctuaries; inspire action through education; and help protect wildlife by supporting on-the-ground conservation efforts.

INSPIRING LEARNING AND ACTION

The National Geographic Photo Ark is a powerful tool for teaching people of all ages about our planet’s amazing biodiversity and fostering a real connection to Earth’s wildlife. The project engages students in the classroom through free educational materials and activities, and inspires the public through special exhibitions, books, TV specials, features in National Geographic magazine, and events around the world. An interactive digital experience allows people to engage with Photo Ark content on our website, explore animals in the collection, and share information about at-risk species with their social networks.

PROTECTING SPECIES

With estimates of more than one million species worldwide threatened with extinction, there is no better time to take action and empower others protecting our world’s biodiversity. That is why the Photo Ark, in an effort to further its support of on-the-ground conservation efforts, launched the Photo Ark Species Impact Initiative in 2023. The Species Impact Initiative provides impactful funding and strategic communications support to help protect at-risk species by elevating the profile of the conservationists, their work, and their focal species.

In the first year, a grant was awarded to National Geographic Explorer George Gann. Gann is also the President, Chair & Founder of the Institute for Regional Conservation where he works to protect the federally endangered Miami tiger beetle and Bartram’s scrub-hairstreak butterfly amongst many other threatened and endangered species and their habitat in southern Florida.
