🎨🦁 Presenting "The Amiable King"! 🌟
We are thrilled to unveil the latest masterpiece from our Roar & Pour Artist/Animal Art Collaboration: "The Amiable King," created by our very own resident zoo royalty, Tatu the Lion, and the exceptionally talented local artist Maia Morrison ! 🎨👑

At just 17 years old, Maia is our youngest-ever participant in this collaboration. Self-taught and bursting with creativity, Maia brings a bold and expressive style to her artwork, with vivid colors and fluid movements that breathe life into her creations.

In "The Amiable King," Tatu's regal presence is brought to life through a unique process: the canvas was washed with a thin coat of maroon paint, and then Tatu left his majestic footprints behind. Maia then masterfully painted Tatu around the turquoise paw prints, creating a captivating portrayal of our beloved king of the jungle. 🎨🦁

Roar & Pour Wine Fest Presented by Kaw Valley Bank and Kendall Construction occurs on April 27th and features wines from around the world, food samplings, and live music. The focal point of this fundraiser is the animal art collaboration, which will be available via silent auction starting April 19. You do not need to be at the event to bid on auction items.

Artist statement:
"The canvas itself was washed with a thin coat of maroon paint before it was given to the lion at the Topeka Zoo to paint. It was such a unique and special experience to be allowed to paint up close with a Lion and not one to be forgotten soon. Using bright colors and pronounced brush strokes, The lion was painted around the turquoise paw prints. This was done using a mix of paint washes and glazing to layer the textures and hues."

🎨🦦 Presenting "All Creatures Great and Small"! 🌟
Prepare to be amazed by this extraordinary artwork, a collaboration between our playful resident zoo star, Albert the Otter, and the exceptionally talented local artist Sharon Luella Easterling! 🎨🦦

In "All Creatures Great and Small," Albert's playful paw prints set the stage for Sharon Luella's artistic prowess. With fine art pens and paper, she meticulously illustrated an otter, adorning each section with her intricate hand-drawn patterns. The result? A captivating masterpiece that celebrates the beauty of nature and artistry! 🎨🦦

Artist Statement:
Sharon Luella's inspiration behind her artwork "All Creatures Great and Small" began as she researched photographs and images of otters and discovered how they hold their hands as they stand on their hind legs. This sparked a connection for her, leading her to contemplate the idea of prayer and God's love for all creatures, including animals. The process of watching Albert the Otter leave his paw prints on paper, guided by his caretaker with the promise of a fish as a reward, highlights the harmonious relationship between humans and animals. From there, Sharon Luella drew an image of an otter including her hand-drawn intricate patterns in each section using fine art pens and paper. She cut up the paw prints, decoupaged them to a flat canvas, and attached her artwork with a foam adhesive which slightly raised it off the canvas providing a 3D effect. Having it framed gave it the perfect finishing touch.

Reminder! **On April 20th only from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm**, the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center is trying to collect 8,500 pounds of gently used clothing and shoes which is equal to the weight of Tembo, the zoo’s African elephant!

**On April 20th only**, the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center is excited to challenge the community to help collect gently used articles of clothing and shoes during their Earth Day celebration. This clothing drive is trying to collect 8,500 pounds of gently used clothing and shoes which is equal to the weight of Tembo, the zoo’s African elephant!

Community members can drop items off at the south entry gate to the zoo, just south of Helen Hocker Theater, in the zoo’s new overflow parking lot.

How does this donation challenge add value to Zoo Conservation goals? Re-purposing or reusing clothing material reduces the resources used to create new clothing!
