‘Cause when you’re ✨ fifteen ✨ your care team tells you they love you, you’re gonna believe them.

Kalijon has entered a new era & is celebrating her birthday today! As you can tell, our Bornean orangutan care team was pretty Swift in coming up with her party theme (THANK YOU to the amazing interns & volunteers that helped with painting and preparing all her birthday enrichment)!

Kali arrived at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center last May from Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium, which is where she was born. Her upbringing was very unique- Kali’s biological mother was not showing proper maternal skills, so Kali was raised by a ‘foster’ mother (another Bornean orangutan named Jill). Since her previous home is only ~an hour away, she continues to get visits from her previous care team! We even ran into a previous care team member during their visit today. 💕

Now- we’d like to cue all the punny comments, because Kali has quite the Fearless Reputation. We all know she’s just a Lover celebrating her birthday on the inside! 🦧

HUGE shoutout to the City of Topeka workers that helped us today with a yearly daunting task- cleaning out the moat in our sun bear 🐻 yard!

Clearing out the debris doesn’t just help keep the Zoo tidy. It helps control our mosquito population- which is important for the health of our animals, staff & guests.

While this is certainly a ‘dirty’ job (where’s Mike Rowe when we need him?) we hope that getting to feed the giraffes afterwards was an acceptable reward! 🦒

🏔️🐱 Mountain Lion Update! 🐱🏔️

Our Mountain Lion, Cassy, is 16 years old which is considered geriatric. A few days ago, she wasn’t acting like her normal spunky self. Over the weekend, our vet team did an exam under anesthesia to get full diagnostics on her. She has since woken up from the exam, and has shown signs of improvement. “While she’s not out of the woods, she is eating now and looking better.” states animal curator Shanna.

We are very proud of how many geriatric animals we get the privilege of taking care of at the Topeka Zoo. Animals living past the average lifespan showcases the amazing care accredited zoos can provide. On average, a mountain lion’s lifespan in the wild is about 10 years.

Cassy is taking time to rest and recuperate, and will be off display until she is exhibiting normal behavior.

We cherish every day we get to take care of Cassy, and hope guests get to see her sassy personality again soon. 🏔️🐱
